ABC13 Who’s Hiring Career Fair Gives Parents A Way To Cover Child Care For One Year

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – For over 18 months, ABC13’s Who’s Hiring Career Fair has helped hundreds of people find work, but we’ve also helped people with child care scholarships. children.

The latest employment report shows that the unemployment gap between men and women has widened over the past year. Experts say one of the reasons for this gap is child care.

“This is always a problem for working parents, because with low paying jobs you have to do the math and make sure it makes sense for you to take those jobs,” explained Michelle Castrow, gatekeeper. word of Workforce Solutions.

A 2020 study shows that the average cost of child care was $ 700 per month.

For help with child care expenses, you can usually find information every Thursday.

ABC13 partners with Workforce Solutions to organize a virtual job fair. Since its inception, the program has helped more than 350 people find jobs. We also helped with childcare. During the half-hour event, we profile the programs and explain how you can get help.

“There is more money available now than I have seen in my 15 years of work,” said Castrow.

It is also not with a single program. Workforce Solutions currently has three childcare scholarships to help parents during the pandemic.

The first program is their traditional childcare scholarship. It pays for part of the child care. You have to work or go to school 25 hours a week and meet income requirements, which for a family of four are around $ 4,400 a month.

There are some new ones. The agency offers a job search grant.

If you are unemployed and looking for a job, you can get child care for 90 days.

Finally, there is money to help an industry that is desperately looking for workers.

If you are in the hospitality industry, which includes restaurants, bars or hotels; work 25 hours a week; and meet the income requirement, which for a family of four is about $ 5,300 per month, you could get fully covered child care for a year.

It’s a scholarship that could increase the number of children served in Southeast Texas by 50%.

“We hope that with the service industry stimulus funds we can help an additional 12,000 children,” Castrow said.
