EEOC and Federal Agency Partners Release Guidance Document for Military Service Members and Veterans Facing Employment Discrimination | United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC)

Co-authored document explains employment rights and where to get help

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) today released a landmark document, “Protections Against Employment Discrimination for Service Members and Veterans,” outlining federal protections against unlawful discrimination in employment against military and veterans.

The document, jointly authored by the EEOC, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), the U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service, and the Human Rights Division civilians from the United States Department of Justice, details federal laws. and other authorities that provide specific workplace protections for military personnel and veterans. For the first time, it provides a single publication to help veterans and service members determine which federal laws and agencies are responsible for enforcing their workplace rights and where to seek help if they believe those rights have been violated.

“Our military sacrifices tremendously to keep our country safe, and whether they are active duty, reservists or veterans, we need to make sure they know their rights at work and how to enforce them if they are victimized. discrimination.” said EEOC President Charlotte A. Burrows. “This document makes it clear that they are protected from discrimination because of their military service, veteran status, disability, or other reasons, such as race, religion, national origin, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation or gender identity), age or genetic information.”

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division said, “We owe our service members, veterans and their families a deep debt of gratitude for their service to our country. Through rigorous enforcement of federal civil rights laws, the Department of Justice works hard to ensure that the rights of our brave service members and veterans are protected from discrimination and unfair treatment.

OFCCP Director Jenny Yang added, “The OFCCP is pleased to release this important resource on employment discrimination protections for military and veterans with VETS – at the Department of Labor – and our sister federal civil rights agencies. As the federal government makes historic investments in infrastructure, manufacturing and technology, the OFCCP plays a pivotal role in ensuring the country makes full use of the talents of all workers, including protected veterans of our country.

Veterans Employment and Training Service Assistant Secretary James D. Rodriguez said, “We must continue to stand up for our nation’s heroes against discrimination in the workplace. Anyone’s commitment to our armed forces should not be a barrier to success in the civilian workforce. We are proud to partner with our fellow federal agencies to protect service members and veterans in the workplace.

In addition to providing information on laws that specifically protect service members and veterans, the document explains general protections against retaliation, disability discrimination, sexual harassment, and other bases covered.
