Federal Government Mobility Jobs Board Goes Online
Government employees looking for a radical career change can now access a website dedicated to temporary work opportunities in the Australian Public Service.
Parliamentary educators, human resources data professionals at Geoscience Australia and a deputy director of communications for the Australian Research Council are among the nine temporary jobs currently listed on the new council via the APSJobs website.
APSC is promoting the platform as a way for Commonwealth employees to gain experience in other areas of government by applying for advertised temporary positions.
“A manager can immediately offer you an opportunity based on your resume or any other information you’ve been asked to provide,” the APSJobs website says.
“Temporary opportunities are intended to be short-term and/or time-limited.”
Described as a ‘micro-assignment’, ‘secondment’ or ‘temporary transfer’, applying for a vacancy through the mobility job board is different from applying for a non-continuing or continuous government position.
Applicants must be Commonwealth employees and applying for a temporary position equivalent to their current classification.
“An agency may offer a temporary opportunity at a higher classification. However, a permanent promotion to a higher classification must go through the usual recruitment processes and meet the requirements of the APS employment principles and the merit principle,” the commission said.

The job councils initiative is part of a major social strategy launched in March 2021, which outlines ways to develop more flexible and responsive workforce models.
The strategy resulted in the creation of a Workforce Planning Center of Excellence build the workforce planning capability of APS and create the enterprise workforce planning ecosystem.
“Strategic workforce planning is the ongoing process of identifying an organization’s current and future workforce needs against strategy and deliverables, and planning for and mitigating workforce risks resulting from identified workforce gaps,” the commission said.
Basic tools have also been created to help with APS workforce planning, including a framework and key principles for evidence-based, business-linked workforce planning, nimble and flexible.
“The APS Workforce Planning Center provides tools to build workforce planning capacity and conduct workforce planning exercises in APS agencies.
“The hub hosts the latest learning and planning resources, case studies, labor market information, APS workforce information, and various APS and external reports and publications to support workforce planning within the APS,” the commission said.
The commission has also developed guidance for public servants on how to approach a conversation with their manager in looking for a temporary move.
