RAPID CITY, SD – Governor Noem worked with the State of South Dakota and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office to fill vacancies within the agency.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is looking for new hires in every department, and Governor Kristi Noem has stepped in to help “buddy” some new hires. She visited the sheriff’s office on Wednesday to see the results of the combined efforts and met with the new employees before they were sworn in.

The call of the Soutside Dakota The lifestyle combined with perks like signing bonuses has helped attract a few hires, but there is still a plethora of vacancies.

Sheriff Kevin Thom of the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office discussed the attractiveness of the location and the agency itself.

“South Dakota itself is attractive, people love to come here to the Black Hills, if you like outdoor recreation, ”he explains. “As an agency we have a lot of different opportunities for people. Again, you can work in corrections, you can work in drug treatment, you can work in law enforcement. “

About half of the inductees are from out of state and they all have different reasons for choosing this department as their new home. One example is Alejandro Rivera, the new head of San Diego Juvenile Corrections, who wanted a change of scenery.

“The appearance, the climate, the geography, all of this attracts me a lot. I think it’s really pretty here, ”says Rivera.

Some, however, have chosen to stay in the state and serve the communities in which they grew up, such as Cassandra Paulsen, a new correctional reservation technician, who already works at the PCSO.

“I came back because I love the people and I love the environment,” says Paulsen. “It’s a great place to work, I love it here.

Correctional officers are most needed at this time, and a signing bonus of $ 4,000 is offered to candidates selected for the position. You can find more information about these positions here.
