Highways agency asks contractor to install bust of officer who died due to Covid | India News

NEW DELHI: In a surprising move, NHIDCL, an affiliate of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, asked a motorway builder to install the bust of a former executive director at the portal of the Z-Morh tunnel in Jammu -and-Kashmir in the next 15 days. The former director, who was in charge of J&K, died of Covid-19 while the second was at its peak.
This decision surprised many as the NHIDCL asked Apco Shri AmarnathjiTunnelway for “urgent compliance”.
The communication to the company released on Saturday said: “This is to assess that MD, NHIDCL during his official visit to the Z-morh project on August 26, 2021, ordered the dealer to place a bust of Sanjeev Malik, former ED (II), NHIDCL at the Z-morh portal before the visit of the Minister of Road Transport and Highways which is scheduled for September 26, 2021.
Sources said such a directive requires prior authorization from the road transport ministry and that it was unprecedented to ask a private actor to put on a bust. “If the government agency wants this, it should have done it itself. Second, the reason for installing such a bust was not explained. There was an order of the Supreme Court in 2013, which banned the installation of statues of public figures and the construction of any religious structures along the roads, ”said a source.
NHIDCL is implementing two crucial tunnel projects at J&K in Zojila and Z-morh. In the case of the Zojila tunnel, the NHIDCL had come up against a controversy over the award of a consultancy contract to a private actor. After several complaints, the agency had to suspend the contract and launched new tenders.
