Human remains found in Camarillo dumpster
Ventura County Sheriff’s officials were investigating a homicide in Camarillo on Friday after human remains were found in an apartment complex dumpster.
A family member was later arrested.
The possible remains were reported around 6.50am in the 300 block of Townsite Promenade, Capt Cameron Henderson said. The site is in a residential area on the south side of Ponderosa Drive, generally west of Las Posas Road.
After the initial report, sheriff’s investigators were not immediately able to confirm that the find involved a human, Henderson said. But shortly after 12:30 p.m., an investigator from the Ventura County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the remains were human.
The confirmation launched a homicide investigation.
Henderson said the remains belonged to an adult, but declined to release further details. The Sheriff’s Office is contracted to provide policing services in Camarillo.
At noon, the area in front of the apartment was blocked off with yellow police tape and the new sheriff’s mobile command vehicle was installed in the street. A parking lot at the rear of the building has been marked off with red tape.
The agency’s major crimes unit worked at the scene during the day.
As of 6 p.m., a man who is a family member of the victim had been arrested, Henderson said, but no arrests had been made. No further details were released, although officials said they expected to release an update Friday evening or Saturday.
This is the third homicide investigated by the sheriff’s office in the past two weeks. On Sunday evening, a the man was shot and killed in Saticoy. On May 22, a the man was fatally stabbed at Newbury Park. Suspects have been charged in both cases.
