Many job openings in Sandusky County as county focuses on retention

FREMONT — There are 20 job openings at Sandusky County agencies, the most open positions in the county in recent memory, County Administrator Theresa Garcia said Thursday.

Garcia said that number is split among positions in most Sandusky County departments, including Sandusky County EMS, County Juvenile Court, Sandusky County Sheriff’s Office and the Court System. County.

She said it does not include additional openings to Sandusky County Employment and Family Services, the County Health Department and the Developmental Disabilities Council.

Even with the high number of openings, Garcia said there appears to be growing interest in jobs in the county.

“We actually get quite a few applications,” Garcia said.

Garcia said a problem the county occasionally has is interviewing someone for a vacancy, offering them a job, and then the new employee doesn’t show up the first day on the job.

While hiring and filling positions is important to the county, retention is also an important goal, Garcia said.

County Commissioner Charlie Schwochow said one of the commissioners’ priorities when developing the county’s budget this fall will be wages and employee retention.

Schwochow and fellow commissioner Scott Miller said the county is trying to keep its salary competitive to attract and retain employees.

They said that with the nation’s inflation rate above 9%, it’s hard for Sandusky County to keep up with wages.

Melanie Allen, director of Sandusky County Job and Family Services, said her department is doing pretty well when it comes to staffing. The department has just four openings, down from a peak of 12 vacancies.

Although JFS now has most of its positions filled, Allen said some staff in the department are relatively new employees and are still completing their training.

These new employees are not yet carrying full workloads, Allen said.

A new $15 million state grant program for child protection staff will soon make funds available to Ohio’s 88 counties to fund incentives that Allen says include retention bonuses. and registration, employee referrals and tuition reimbursement.

Allen said 30 Sandusky County JFS staff would qualify as child protection staff under grant program guidelines.

She said she believed Sandusky County would get about $76,000 from the program.
