The successful candidate for the position of Emergency Medical Services Instructor – Paramedic will be expected to provide instruction in a full range of Emergency Medical Services courses, including but not limited to Paramedic Services and paramedics. Additionally, this position will also include tasks associated with the development of an online paramedic program. Other responsibilities may include the position of Paramedic Program Director.

Representative functions

This mission may include teaching courses in different places, at different times and with different modalities. Bakersfield College offers college courses in the greater Bakersfield area, rural communities, correctional facilities and high schools using the following modalities: traditional, face-to-face, online and interactive broadcasts.

Other duties include: participating in student recruitment and articulation, transfer programs; keep the subject topical; developing and revising the curriculum; using computers and technology; assessment of learning outcomes; collegial participation in departmental, collegial and disciplinary professional activities.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The mission and purpose of the paramedic is to compassionately provide high quality service and basic and advanced patient care in a professional, caring and cost effective manner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Evaluate each call situation to determine the best course of action and appropriate protocol.

Use medical equipment and procedures, including defibrillator, ECG monitor, oxygen and suction devices, intravenous fluids, CPR, and other procedures and medications necessary to provide advanced medical care.

Develop and use triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls.

Provide patient care in accordance with clinical protocols and safety requirements.

Lift and move patients as needed to provide optimal care.

Communicate with the host institution to receive medical directives and provide essential information.

Communicate with patients and loved ones to provide information and assure them that care is being provided and to demonstrate compassion.

Act as team leader and assume responsibility for scene and unit management as required.

Drive the ambulance and provide card reading support to minimize call response time.

Maintain all required certifications at all times.

Communicate with the dispatcher to receive and understand call data and customer feedback.

Monitor and maintain the overall health of the unit, keep it clean and stored for optimal response to calls to maintain the RAM image.

Completely document patient care and billing activities to ensure appropriate information is available regarding each call.

Follow policies and procedures regarding off-drop hours and turnaround times.

Consider patient status and preferred insurance facilities when determining transportation destinations.

Ability to work after scheduled shift with little or no notice.

Work cooperatively and professionally with all public health and safety paramedics, including other paramedics.

Immediately reports to the Duty Supervisor and/or Account Manager any incident involving a negative interaction with a customer and/or patient.

Read road maps, drive vehicles and accurately discern traffic signs and address numbers.

Read medication/prescription labels and instructions for use quickly, accurately and quickly.

Communicate verbally with patients and significant others in various settings to interview patients, family members and bystanders.

Ability to discern deviations/changes in eye/skin color due to patient condition and treatment administered.

Speak with the dispatcher and EMS providers by phone or radio regarding the patient’s condition.

Adhere to all company policies and procedures.

Adherence to and compliance with information systems security policies and procedures.
