Artificial intelligence-based recruiting tools can affect many people, especially those in need of employment. At present, many people around the world are struggling to make a living due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

On the other hand, many companies have had no choice but to lay off some of their employees to keep their business going. This problem could worsen if the recruiting tool, which uses artificial intelligence, is biased when selecting candidates.

That’s why New York City decided to pass a bill that specifically addresses the growing problem of AI-based tools.

According to PC Mag’s latest report, the new bill was passed on November 10. Bill de Blasio, the current mayor of New York, has still not signed this new law.

The New York mayor still has until Dec. 10 to authorize or veto the new bill. If he ever decided to sign it, the bill would become law, which would come into force on January 1, 2023.

Thanks to this long timeframe, companies and agencies that recruit still have more than a year to prepare their AI tools. They have a lot of time to meet the standards of the bill.

“This bill would require that a biased audit be performed on an automated employment decision-making tool before the tool is used,” the New York City Council explained via its official legislative report.

NYCC added that companies using AI-based recruiting tools should let applicants know if they are going to use the technology when assessing or evaluating the employee.

AI skills are now essential

At present, new AI technologies are being developed by various experts across the world. For this reason, artificial intelligence skills are now seen as essential as technology develops.

Deloitte, a global consulting and auditing firm, explained that the majority of businesses and enterprises now prefer people who understand and know how to use artificial intelligence.

In other news, experts have claimed that super-intelligent AI is becoming difficult to control. On the flip side, NASA’s new AI training program is recruiting people to test the technology.
