Sheffield College launches its own student employment agency – FE News

Sheffield College has started its own employment agency to help students find paid work.

Students who register with the College’s new employment services agency will be able to search for full-time, part-time or seasonal employment opportunities.

The aim of the program is to help students, including adult learners, maintain or achieve financial stability by earning an income while continuing their education.

Whether they are adults in retraining or young people at the start of their careers, the initiative also aims to ensure that students are not financially disadvantaged by enrolling in a college course.

Rachel Topliss, Manager of Employer Engagement, The Sheffield College, noted: “Searching for the right job can be long and stressful. Based on our experience of working with employers, we want to help students looking for temporary or part-time work. This reflects our broader commitment to improving the student experience.

She added: “Having greater financial security will allow students who want paid work opportunities to stay focused on their studies and equip them with employability skills as they advance in their careers. The agency also benefits employers by offering them a free recruitment service and the possibility of interviewing from our talent pool.

All students will have the opportunity to register with the agency, as part of a ‘learning guarantee’, which will offer practical advice on CV writing, job interviews, use of social networks for securing a position, making decisions about job vacancies and career guidance.

Full-time employment opportunities will also be available for alumni to support their progression to a positive destination. The College is developing links with city agencies to ensure a wide range of opportunities and types of contracts.

Several employers, including some sponsors of the Employer Skills Academies, support the system with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the Autotech Academy, specializing in the automotive sector.

Blue Arrow will play a role in creating interim opportunities in the city while the Gleneagle Hotel and Apartments in the South West of Ireland offers international openings in the restaurant and hospitality industry.

Marie Watson, Associate Director, Blue Arrow, noted “Promoting skills and employability development is key to addressing the skills gaps we see in Sheffield and the surrounding area. “

She added: “Sheffield College’s Student Support Program through the Employment Services and Interim Opportunities Agency will help adult learners and young people to become financially independent and develop the skills that will help them build a career, which in turn stimulates the economy and supports social mobility. “

Ann O’Leary, Deputy Director of Human Resources, Gleneagle Hotel and Apartments, noted: “We are delighted to be working with Sheffield College to offer their first overseas employment opportunities where successful applicants will work at the Gleneagle Hotel and Apartments located in Killarney, Co. Kerry, in the South West of Ireland. . “

She added: “This is a long term recruiting campaign as we are really keen on developing and exploiting young talent and we are really excited about this new partnership with the College. “

The College has recently started to organize introductory digital skills internships, training new talents in cybersecurity, infrastructure technicians and software development. The first cohort of adult learners is expected to complete their courses in December 2021.
