Sports agency can’t stop Rival from hiring basketball manager

By Rachel Scharf (March 23, 2022, 6:51 p.m. EDT) — A New York state judge on Wednesday refused to issue a court order restraining the former Excel Sports off-court basketball marketing executive Management LLC to work for a rival sports agency founded by powerful NBA representative Rich Paul.

Excel alleged in a March 8 complaint that Eric Eways had signed a non-compete agreement promising not to work for any major competitors within eight months of leaving the agency. Yet less than a month after his departure in February, Excel said, Eways took over the player sponsorship division of Paul’s Klutch Sports Group LLC.
