Weirton Council Approves Wage Adjustment for One-Time Employees | News, Sports, Jobs
WEIRTON – Weirton’s council approved a one-time salary adjustment for all municipal employees on Monday evening due to continuing state and federal states of emergency linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The votes followed a 110-minute executive session, which city attorney Vince Gurrera said focused on contracts, pay and personnel issues.
According to City Manager Mike Adams, the one-time salary adjustment will provide $ 1,000 for all full-time employees and $ 500 for part-time employees.
“This was based on the continuing state of emergency,” he said, noting that status related to the COVID-19 pandemic remains in effect with both the federal government and the state of Virginia- Western.
As the pandemic continues, Adams noted, city workers in many departments continue to be at risk of exposure in the line of duty.
“Our people always face dangers,” Adams said.
Ahead of the vote, Ward 3 Councilor Fred Marsh proposed an amendment that would stipulate the inclusion of employees of the city’s autonomous councils in receiving the salary adjustment.
The amendment was approved 4-3, with Marsh and Council Members Tim Connell, Chris Jonczak and Flora Perrone voting for and Council Members George Ash, Enzo Fracasso and Terry Weigel voting against.
The final ordinance was approved by a 5-2 vote, with Connell, Jonczak, Marsh, Ash and Perrone in favor, and Fracasso and Weigel against.
The measure is similar to the one adopted by the council around the same time last year.
The Council also unanimously approved the request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security for the 2021 Firefighter Assistance Grant in the amount of $ 749,673.27. to help with the purchase of a new fire truck.
“You apply for it and hope to get it,” Adams said, noting that the grant is not guaranteed, but would provide the necessary support for the planned purchase.

If approved by FEMA, the city would be required to provide a match of $ 35,698.73.
