Youth Employment Agency says it has hired 144,000 young people from 2017 to date

The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) since 2017 to date, has hired a total of 144,521 young people, Parliament was informed by Mr. Bright Wireko-Brobbey, Deputy Minister for Employment and Professional relationships.

The breakdown includes Community Protection Program 17,500; 3,000 Arabic Instructors Module; Youth in Sport Program 1988; Youth Sanitation Program 45,000; 150 Graduate Internship Program, 300 Regional Flagship Program; School support program 7,730; and YEA Job Center 1012.

The others are Youth in Elite Sports 1,000; Youth in reforestation 60,000; Entrepreneurship training 5,000; agricultural extension workers 1,200; M&E Assessment Wizards 558; and project assistants 83.

Mr. Wireko-Brobbey made the revelation on Friday, on the floor of Parliament, in his response to a question from Mr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale Central.

The MP asked the Deputy Minister how many people the YEA had hired under the program since 2017.

The Deputy Minister said that the youth employment program as established by the Youth Employment Agency Act, 2015 (Act 887) was an intervention program aimed at providing young Ghanaians with job opportunities.

He said the main objective of the Agency was to develop, coordinate, supervise and facilitate the creation of jobs for young people.

He stated that the sources of funding for the National Youth Employment Scheme, in accordance with Section 23 of the Youth Employment Agency Act 2015 (Act 887), were funds approved by the Parliament for the Agency, 80% of the Communications Services Tax (CST) and 10% of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) according to the formula approved by Parliament pursuant to Article 252 of the 1992 Constitution .

Others are five percent of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) subject to the formula approved by Parliament under the Ghana Education Trust Fund Act 2000 (Act 581) and grants , gifts and grants.

Mr. Wireko-Brobbey said that currently a total of 11 modules under the youth employment program are functional:

Community Protection Program, Youth in Sport Program, Youth in Sanitation Program, Regional Flagship Program, School Support Program, YEA Employment Center, Youth in Elite Sports, Youth in Reforestation, Training in Entrepreneurship, M&E Assessment Assistants and Project Assistants.
